Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the lightest option. It takes effect quickly, wears off within minutes after the mask is removed and leaves most patients able to drive themselves home. Oral sedation is taken as a pill before your appointment. It produces a deeper sense of calm and many patients feel drowsy enough that they have little memory of the visit. Because it takes longer to clear your system, you’ll need a ride to and from the office. It’s a good fit for patients who want to feel genuinely relaxed without an IV.
